A scheidingskolom, also known as a separation column or distillation column, is a piece of chemical engineering equipment used in industrial processes to separate components of a liquid mixture through selective boiling and condensation. The fundamental principle behind its operation is the difference in volatility between the substances to be separated.

The column itself is typically a tall, cylindrical vessel containing internal structures such as trays or packing material. The liquid mixture is introduced into the column, usually at the middle. Heat is applied to the bottom of the column, causing the mixture to vaporize. As the vapor rises through the column, it comes into contact with the cooler descending liquid. This repeated contact and exchange of heat and mass allows for a progressive separation. Components with higher volatility will vaporize more readily and move upwards, while those with lower volatility will condense and move downwards.

The vapor that reaches the top of the column is then cooled in a condenser, where it turns back into a liquid, referred to as the distillate. This distillate is enriched in the more volatile components. The liquid that remains at the bottom of the column, known as the bottoms product, is enriched in the less volatile components. The efficiency of the separation depends on factors such as the column's height, the design of the internal trays or packing, the reflux ratio (the amount of condensed liquid returned to the column), and the temperature and pressure profiles within the column. Scheidingskolommen are vital in numerous industries, including petroleum refining, petrochemicals, and the production of alcoholic beverages and fine chemicals.
