Scaffoldings are temporary structures used to provide access to elevated work areas and to support materials during construction, maintenance, and repair tasks. They are assembled on site and designed to bear loads from people, tools, and equipment while ensuring safe access and egress.

There are two main classes: supported scaffolds, which rest on the ground or a base and may be tied to the structure for stability, and suspended scaffolds, which hang from overhead supports and can be raised or lowered. Supported scaffolds include frame and brace systems, modular or system scaffolds, and lightweight towers. Suspended scaffolds include platforms that are hung from above and can be adjusted to different heights.

Materials commonly used are steel, aluminum, and wood planks. Components typically include standards (uprights), ledgers and transoms (horizontal members), braces for stability, deck boards or platforms, and fittings or couplers to join parts. Access is provided by ladders, stairs, or built-in climb systems. The selection of system type depends on site conditions, required reach, and load considerations.

Safety and regulatory standards govern scaffold use. In the United States, OSHA requirements apply, along with local codes; in Europe, EN 12811-1 is a common reference. Regulations specify load ratings, guardrails, toe boards, ties, base support, and regular inspections. Erection, dismantling, and use should be performed by trained personnel, with daily inspections, proper fall protection, weather assessments, and clear load limits posted.

Scaffolding systems have a long history and modern standardized components improve safety and interchangeability. They remain essential for construction, painting, restoration, and maintenance work.
