Saveachtige refers to a group of semi-aquatic mammals belonging to the order Sirenia. This order is further divided into two families: the dugongs and the manatees. Both saveachtigen are characterized by their large, fusiform bodies, paddle-like forelimbs, and absence of hind limbs. Their tails are typically flattened and horizontally oriented, providing propulsion through water.

Dugongs are distinguished by their fluked, whale-like tail and tusks that are present in males and some females. They are found in the Indo-Pacific region and primarily inhabit shallow coastal waters and seagrass beds, their main food source. Manatees, on the other hand, possess a rounded, paddle-shaped tail and lack tusks. They are found in the Atlantic Ocean, including the Caribbean Sea and the Gulf of Mexico, as well as in some West African rivers. Manatees also feed on seagrass and other aquatic vegetation.

Saveachtigen are herbivorous and play a crucial role in maintaining the health of seagrass ecosystems by grazing. They are generally slow-moving and docile creatures. Sadly, many populations of saveachtigen are endangered due to threats such as habitat loss, pollution, entanglement in fishing gear, and hunting. Conservation efforts are in place to protect these gentle giants and their vital marine habitats. Their evolutionary history traces back millions of years, with fossil evidence suggesting a terrestrial ancestry.
