Saproliitteina is a Finnish term used in geology to refer to rocks or rock units that exist in a saprolite state, meaning a deeply weathered portion of bedrock in which primary minerals have been transformed but the overall rock fabric is still recognizable. In English, this idea is described with the term saprolite.

Saprolites form through long-term chemical weathering of intact bedrock under moist, typically warm conditions. Reactions such as hydrolysis and hydration alter feldspars and other primary minerals into clay minerals and iron or aluminum oxides. Elements that are mobile in weathering fluids, such as potassium, calcium, sodium, and silica, are leached away, while more resistant components may remain, leading to a soft, clay-rich, structurally altered layer that can retain the original rock texture to some extent.

Common characteristics of saprolitic rocks include a crumbly or blocky texture, a color range from red to brown or purple depending on iron oxide content, and a pronounced contrast with the underlying less-weathered bedrock. Saprolites can overlie fresh bedrock or less-weathered zones and may act as aquifers or, conversely, as low-permeability layers, depending on their porosity and cementation.

Distribution is widespread in tropical and subtropical regions, where intense weathering is common, but saprolite profiles also occur in temperate areas with prolonged weathering histories. Studying saprolites provides insights into past climate, long-term soil formation, groundwater resources, and mineral-resource investigations. In Finnish scientific writing, saprolite material is often described “saproliitteina” to indicate its saprolitic condition.
