Typical duties include inspecting restaurants, schools, hospitals, and other facilities for sanitary compliance; collecting and analyzing samples of food, water, and environmental materials; enforcing health codes and nuisance abatement orders; investigating disease outbreaks; advising on sanitation improvements and pest control; and educating the public about healthy practices.

Education and certification are variable by country and region, but sanitarians typically hold degrees in public health, environmental health, or related fields. Professional credentialing is common in many places, with organizations such as the National Environmental Health Association offering credentials like Registered Environmental Health Specialist (REHS) and related recognitions for sanitation professionals.

Employment is found in local or state health departments, environmental health agencies, or private consultancies. Sanitarians collaborate with engineers, epidemiologists, and other public health workers to prevent hazards, promote safe food and water, and strengthen community health infrastructure.
