Sandørkener, also known as ergs, are desert landscapes characterized by vast expanses of sand. Unlike stony deserts or salt flats, sand dunes are the dominant feature in these environments. These dunes are formed by the action of wind, which erodes and transports sand particles. The shape and size of sand dunes vary greatly depending on factors such as wind direction, sand supply, and the presence of vegetation. Common dune formations include barchans, which are crescent-shaped, and linear dunes, which stretch for miles in a relatively straight line.

The formation of sand deserts typically occurs in arid or semi-arid regions with a consistent supply of sand and strong prevailing winds. Vegetation is scarce, as the harsh conditions make it difficult for plants to survive. However, some specialized species have adapted to these environments, anchoring dunes and contributing to their stability. Water is extremely limited, often found only in underground aquifers or as rare surface water after infrequent rainfall.

Life in sand deserts is challenging, but a variety of organisms have evolved unique strategies to cope with the heat, aridity, and lack of resources. These include nocturnal animals that avoid the daytime heat, and plants with deep root systems or water-storing capabilities. Despite their seemingly barren appearance, sand deserts are dynamic ecosystems with a unique and resilient biodiversity. Famous examples of sand deserts include the Sahara Desert in Africa and the Arabian Desert in the Middle East.
