Sanakompositioihin, often translated as word composition or compounding, is a morphological process where two or more independent words are combined to form a new, single word with a distinct meaning. This new word, known as a compound, functions grammatically as a single unit.

In many languages, including Finnish, word composition is a very productive and common way to create new vocabulary. The resulting compounds can express complex ideas concisely. For example, combining "talo" (house) and "mies" (man) creates "talomies" (caretaker or janitor), a single word referring to a specific role. Similarly, "maa" (land/country) and "lippu" (flag) combine to form "maalipuu" (goalpost in sports), illustrating how the meaning is derived from the constituent parts.

The order of the words in a compound is usually significant. The first word often modifies or specifies the meaning of the second word. For instance, in "kirjahylly" (bookshelf), "kirja" (book) modifies "hylly" (shelf), indicating a shelf specifically for books. The stress pattern in compounds can also differ from that of the individual words.

Word composition can occur between various word classes, such as noun-noun, adjective-noun, or verb-noun combinations. The grammatical function of the compound is typically determined by the head word, which is usually the last element in the compound. This process allows for the efficient expansion of a language's lexicon.
