Applications in civil engineering and construction: Soil compaction uses rollers, rammers, or plate compactors to densify the soil, increase bearing capacity, and reduce settlement and permeability. In construction, compacted fill is used as a foundation material and as subgrade support for roads, foundations, and structures.

In materials science and powder metallurgy: Dry or wet powders are pressed to form shapes or densify before sintering; the resulting density, porosity, and mechanical strength depend on pressure, material properties, and moisture content.
