Saltighet is a term used to describe two related concepts related to salt: the sensory property of saltiness and the physical property of salinity in solutions. In everyday language, saltighet often refers to how salty a food tastes, while in scientific contexts it can denote the amount of dissolved salts in water or other liquids.

Saltiness, or the taste sensation, is one of the basic tastes detected by the human gustatory system. It is primarily triggered by sodium ions from compounds such as sodium chloride, the common table salt. Other salts can contribute to saltiness as well. The perceived intensity depends on concentration, temperature, and the presence of other flavors, as well as individual variation in taste sensitivity and adaptation over time.

Salinity, in a scientific sense, refers to the concentration of dissolved salts in a liquid. It is commonly measured in practical salinity units (PSU) or parts per thousand (ppt). Seawater typically has a salinity around 35 PSU (35 ppt). Freshwater usually has very low salinity, while brackish water falls in between.
