Etymology traces the word to Latin salarium, historically tied to payments made to soldiers for salt, and it passed into various European languages through French salaire and other intermediaries. The term has evolved to denote regular remuneration for labor in modern employment contexts.

A salary typically comprises several components. The base salary is the core fixed amount agreed in the employment contract.
