Saippualiuokset, often translated as soap solutions or lye solutions, are aqueous solutions containing alkaline substances primarily used in the production of soap through a process called saponification. The most common alkaline substances used are sodium hydroxide (NaOH), also known as lye or caustic soda, and potassium hydroxide (KOH), also known as caustic potash. These strong bases are dissolved in water to create the reactive solution needed for saponification.

The concentration of the saippualiuokset is a critical factor in soap making. It directly influences the rate of saponification and the final characteristics of the soap, such as its hardness and lathering properties.
