One of the primary functions of cGMP is to relax smooth muscle cells. This relaxation leads to vasodilation, which is the widening of blood vessels. Dysregulation of this pathway has been implicated in several diseases, such as hypertension, erectile dysfunction, and pulmonary arterial hypertension. For instance, sildenafil, commonly known as Viagra, works by inhibiting phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5), an enzyme that breaks down cGMP, thereby enhancing its effects.
