sCMOS (scientific complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor) is a type of digital image sensor that has gained popularity in scientific imaging applications due to its favorable characteristics. These sensors are designed to offer a balance of high sensitivity, low noise, and fast readout speeds, making them suitable for a wide range of demanding imaging tasks. Unlike traditional CMOS sensors used in consumer electronics, sCMOS sensors are optimized for detecting very low light levels with high signal-to-noise ratios.

A key feature of sCMOS technology is its design which often incorporates pixel binning capabilities. This allows for summing the charge from adjacent pixels, effectively increasing the sensitivity of the sensor at the cost of spatial resolution, which can be advantageous in extremely low-light conditions. Furthermore, sCMOS sensors typically exhibit a global shutter, meaning all pixels are exposed simultaneously.
