Süsinikterase, often referred to as carbon steel, is a metal alloy composed primarily of iron and carbon. The amount of carbon present in the steel significantly influences its properties, such as hardness and strength. Generally, carbon steel contains between 0.02% and 2.1% carbon by weight. Other alloying elements are typically present in minimal amounts, though manganese, silicon, and copper may be added to modify specific characteristics.

It is characterized by its ductility, weldability, and relative ease of machining.
