Seleucid is a term referring to the Seleucid Empire, one of the Hellenistic states that emerged after the death of Alexander the Great. The empire was founded by Seleucus I Nicator, one of Alexander's generals, in 312 BCE. At its greatest extent, the Seleucid Empire stretched from the eastern Mediterranean to the Indus River, encompassing a vast and diverse territory.

The Seleucid Empire was characterized by its Greek ruling class and its efforts to Hellenize the diverse populations within its borders.
