A sähköhammasharja, or electric toothbrush, is a toothbrush that uses an oscillating, rotating, or vibrating motion to clean teeth. It is powered by a rechargeable battery or, in some older models, disposable batteries. The primary advantage of an electric toothbrush over a manual one is its ability to remove plaque more effectively. Many electric toothbrushes come with various features such as timers to ensure adequate brushing time, pressure sensors to prevent damage to gums and enamel, and different brushing modes for specific needs like whitening or gum care.

There are several types of electric toothbrushes available on the market. Sonic toothbrushes, on the other hand, vibrate at very high speeds, creating dynamic cleaning action that can reach between teeth and along the gumline. Studies have generally shown that electric toothbrushes, particularly oscillating-rotating and sonic models, are more effective at reducing plaque and gingivitis than manual toothbrushes. They can be particularly beneficial for individuals who have difficulty using a manual toothbrush effectively, such as those with limited dexterity, or for children. Maintaining good oral hygiene with an electric toothbrush involves regular replacement of the brush head, typically every three to four months, and proper charging of the device.
