Säämalleissa, the Finnish term for weather models, are sophisticated computer programs designed to forecast atmospheric conditions. These models take current weather data, such as temperature, pressure, wind speed, and humidity, from various sources like weather stations, satellites, and buoys, and use complex mathematical equations to simulate how the atmosphere will evolve over time.

The foundation of säämalleissa lies in the physics of the atmosphere. They are based on principles of fluid dynamics, thermodynamics, and radiative transfer. Different models exist, varying in their spatial resolution (the size of the grid boxes they use to represent the atmosphere) and the complexity of the physical processes they incorporate. Higher resolution models can often predict finer details of weather, but they require significantly more computational power.

Numerical weather prediction (NWP) is the core technique employed by säämalleissa. They divide the Earth's atmosphere into a three-dimensional grid and solve the governing equations for each grid point at discrete time steps. This process is repeated iteratively to generate forecasts for hours, days, and even weeks into the future.
