Røntgenografi is a medical imaging technique that uses X-rays to create images of the inside of the body. These images are primarily used for diagnosing and monitoring a wide range of medical conditions. The process involves directing a beam of X-rays through the body part being examined. Different tissues absorb X-rays to varying degrees. Denser tissues like bone absorb more X-rays and appear white on the resulting image, while softer tissues like muscle and organs allow more X-rays to pass through and appear in shades of gray. Air-filled spaces, such as the lungs, absorb very few X-rays and appear black.

The X-ray beam then strikes a detector, which can be photographic film or, more commonly today, a digital sensor. This detector records the pattern of X-ray absorption and converts it into a visible image. Røntgenografi is a relatively quick and painless procedure. It is widely used to examine bones for fractures, to detect abnormalities in the lungs and heart, and to screen for certain types of cancer. While generally safe, the amount of radiation exposure is a consideration, and medical professionals ensure that the benefits of the diagnostic information outweigh any potential risks. Repeat examinations are avoided unless medically necessary.
