Röntgenlaitte, often translated as X-ray apparatus or X-ray machine, refers to the medical equipment used to generate X-rays for diagnostic imaging. These devices are fundamental to modern healthcare, enabling visualization of internal body structures.

The core components of a röntgenlaitte include an X-ray tube, a power source, and a control console. The X-ray tube is a vacuum-sealed glass envelope containing a filament (cathode) and a target (anode). When electricity is applied, the filament heats up and emits electrons. These electrons are then accelerated towards the anode at high speed. Upon striking the anode, the electrons decelerate rapidly, producing X-rays.

The power source provides the necessary high voltage to accelerate the electrons and operate the X-ray tube. The control console allows medical professionals to adjust parameters such as voltage, current, and exposure time, thereby controlling the intensity and energy of the X-rays produced. This control is crucial for obtaining optimal images while minimizing radiation dose to the patient.

The generated X-rays pass through the patient's body. Different tissues absorb X-rays to varying degrees. Denser tissues like bone absorb more X-rays, appearing lighter on the resulting image, while softer tissues absorb fewer and appear darker. The transmitted X-rays are then captured by an image receptor, which can be photographic film, a digital detector, or a computed radiography plate. This captured image provides a visual representation of the internal anatomy.
