Részecskefizikai, often translated as particle physics, is the branch of physics that studies the fundamental constituents of matter and radiation, and the forces that govern their interactions. It seeks to understand the basic building blocks of the universe and the rules that dictate how they behave.

The primary focus of particle physics is on elementary particles, which are particles that are not composed of smaller particles. These include quarks, leptons (such as electrons and neutrinos), and force-carrying bosons (like photons and gluons). The Standard Model of particle physics is a theoretical framework that describes these elementary particles and three of the four fundamental forces: electromagnetism, the strong nuclear force, and the weak nuclear force. Gravity, the fourth fundamental force, is not currently included in the Standard Model.

Experimental particle physics involves using particle accelerators, such as the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN, to collide particles at very high energies. These collisions create new particles, allowing physicists to study their properties and search for evidence of new theories beyond the Standard Model. Theoretical particle physics, on the other hand, develops mathematical models and frameworks to explain experimental observations and predict new phenomena.

Key areas of research in particle physics include understanding the nature of dark matter and dark energy, exploring the Higgs boson and its role in giving mass to other particles, and investigating potential extensions to the Standard Model, such as supersymmetry. The ultimate goal is to develop a unified theory that can explain all fundamental particles and forces in the universe.
