Régions is a term used to describe territorial units that share geographic, cultural, historical, or administrative characteristics. Regions can arise from natural features such as mountains and rivers, from historical boundaries, or from contemporary governance arrangements. They are often used for planning, policy implementation, statistical analysis, and the shaping of regional identities.

Types of regions include geographic regions, which are defined by physical or cultural criteria; administrative regions, which have a governance role and some degree of public authority; and statistical or functional regions, created mainly for data collection, planning, and economic analysis (for example, within the European Union’s Nomenclature of Territorial Units for Statistics, or NUTS). In some countries, regions have elected assemblies and budgets; in others, they function mainly as subnational divisions without autonomous powers.

Examples of regional organization vary widely. In France, regions are administrative entities with elected regional councils responsible for economic development, transport, and higher education coordination, while the national state maintains central oversight through prefects. In Italy, the regioni have varying autonomy; in Germany, the Länder perform similar roles; in Spain, the comparable units are comunidades autónomas. Across Europe and beyond, regions serve to balance local particularities with national governance, support territorial cohesion, and facilitate targeted public policy.

Challenges include defining stable boundaries, ensuring equitable resource distribution, and reconciling regional identities with national unity. The concept of a region remains flexible, adapting to political reform, demographic change, and evolving administrative needs.
