Rymdpolitik, or space policy, is the set of strategic choices by a state or region regarding the exploration, utilization, governance, and security of outer space. It encompasses the development of space science and technology, regulatory frameworks, budgetary priorities, and international diplomacy aimed at maximizing societal and economic benefits while safeguarding security and safety.

In Sweden, rymdpolitik is pursued through national institutions and international cooperation. The Swedish government coordinates civil space activities through the Swedish National Space Agency (Rymdstyrelsen) and participates in European Space Agency programs, Earth observation initiatives, and satellite technology development. Sweden engages in international climate and security objectives and supports research in space science, satellite navigation, and telecommunications.

Legal framework and international cooperation are central to rymdpolitik. National space policy is shaped by international law, notably the Outer Space Treaty of 1967, which sets principles for non-appropriation, peaceful use, and responsibility for national activities, as well as related treaties on liability, rescue, and registration. International cooperation frameworks include UNOOSA and ESA, through which countries coordinate missions, data sharing, and standards.

Strategic priorities typically include the development of space infrastructure and industry, Earth observation for environmental monitoring and disaster response, scientific missions, capacity building, and space sustainability such as debris mitigation and end-of-life disposal. Policy debates address the balance between civilian and dual-use applications, funding levels, data access, export controls, and safeguarding critical space infrastructure.

Sweden’s rymdpolitik also emphasizes international collaboration, knowledge transfer, and alignment with EU and ESA goals, such as the Copernicus and Galileo programs.
