Ryktesskade is a Norwegian term describing damage to a person’s reputation caused by the spread of rumors or unverified statements. It focuses on the reputational harm rather than direct financial loss, though such harm can lead to other consequences.

Rumors may be spread by media outlets, online platforms, or interpersonal networks and can concern private individuals or public figures. When such statements are false or highly misleading, they can constitute a breach of personal honor and give rise to civil liability; in Norway and similar systems, ryktesskade is closely related to the concept of defamation or ærekrenkelse.

To establish ryktesskade in court, the claimant typically must show that the information was published to others, that it was false or unverified, and that it caused reputational harm. The claimant may also need to prove fault, such as negligence or intent, and a causal link between the publication and the harm. Remedies may include damages and injunctions to stop further dissemination.

Defences commonly include truth of the statements, public interest, or that the statements were expressions of opinion not presenting as facts.
