Ryhävalaid, scientifically known as Megaptera novaeangliae, are large baleen whales characterized by their distinctive long pectoral fins, knobbly heads, and elaborate songs. They belong to the rorqual family, which includes other large whales like blue whales and humpback whales. These whales are found in oceans worldwide, migrating between polar feeding grounds and warmer breeding waters annually.

Adult ryhävalaid typically measure between 12 and 16 meters in length and can weigh up to 40,000 kilograms. Their coloration is generally dark grey or black on their backs, with white markings on their bellies, flippers, and tail flukes. The pattern of these white markings is unique to each individual, serving as a means of identification for researchers.

Ryhävalaid are filter feeders, consuming vast quantities of small prey such as krill and small fish. They employ a unique feeding strategy called bubble-net feeding, where groups of whales work together to trap prey by releasing streams of bubbles. These whales are renowned for their acrobatic behaviors, including breaching, where they leap out of the water, and tail-slapping.

The complex and melodic songs produced by male ryhävalaid are a subject of significant scientific interest. These songs, which can last for up to 20 minutes and be heard for miles, are thought to play a role in mating rituals. Ryhävalaid were heavily hunted during the commercial whaling era, leading to a significant decline in their populations. Conservation efforts have since helped many populations to recover, though they still face threats from ship strikes, entanglement in fishing gear, and habitat degradation.
