Rutering is the process of determining and managing routes to connect origins and destinations in a system. In Dutch and Afrikaans, the term denotes routing, the planning and execution of paths for movement of people, goods, or information. In English, the term is uncommon, with "routing" being the usual expression. Rutering encompasses a range of applications across transport, logistics, telecommunications, and public safety.

In logistics and transportation, rutering refers to route planning and vehicle routing, aiming to minimize distance, travel time, or cost while meeting service constraints such as delivery time windows and vehicle capacity. In telecommunications and computer networks, rutering describes packet or data routing, selecting paths through a network to deliver messages from source to destination, accounting for congestion, reliability, and quality of service. In emergency services, routing decisions influence response times by choosing fastest or most reliable routes.

Methods used include classic routing algorithms for static networks, such as shortest-path algorithms (Dijkstra, Bellman-Ford), as well as more complex optimization approaches for vehicle routing problems (VRP), time-window constraints, and multi-criteria routing. Modern systems often employ dynamic routing, leveraging real-time data on traffic, road closures, or network conditions, and integrating with geographic information systems and sensors.

The rutering process typically involves data collection, model selection, computation of optimal or near-optimal routes, dissemination to field agents or automated systems, and monitoring with feedback for recalculation as conditions change.
