Ruostesienet, also known as rust fungi, are a group of obligate plant pathogens within the order Pucciniales of the Basidiomycota. They infect a wide range of flowering plants and trees, and are notable for producing rust-colored pustules on leaves, stems, fruits or other tissues. Collectively, ruostesienet cause numerous rust diseases that affect agricultural crops, ornamental plants and forestry.

Many rust fungi have complex life cycles that may involve two or more host species and several spore types. They commonly alternate between a primary host and a secondary, often unrelated, host. Spore forms include urediniospores, teliospores, basidiospores and, in two-host rusts, aeciospores. In some species the cycle can occur entirely on a single host. Environmental conditions that favor leaf wetness and moderate temperatures promote spore germination and infection.

Symptoms vary by species and host but typically include clusters of pustules that release powdery masses of spores, giving leaves a yellow, orange or brown appearance. Infected tissues may show reduced photosynthesis, premature leaf drop and lower crop yields. Some rusts are highly host-specific, while others have broader host ranges, contributing to their potential for rapid spread across landscapes.

Ruostesienet are distributed worldwide, with significant economic impacts on cereals (such as wheat and oats), legumes and various tree species. The disease pressure is influenced by climate, crop management practices and the presence of alternate hosts in the environment.

Management combines resistant plant varieties, cultural practices to reduce inoculum, and chemical control when appropriate. Strategies include removing or managing alternate hosts where feasible, timely fungicide applications, and monitoring for early signs of infection to mitigate yield losses.
