Ruokajärjestys, often translated as "food order" or "food chain," is a fundamental ecological concept that describes the feeding relationships between organisms in an ecosystem. It illustrates the flow of energy from one trophic level to another. At the base of most ruokajärjestys are producers, typically plants, algae, or some bacteria, which create their own food through photosynthesis. These organisms convert light energy into chemical energy in the form of organic compounds.

Primary consumers, also known as herbivores, occupy the next level. They feed directly on producers, obtaining energy by consuming plant matter. Examples include insects that eat leaves, or rabbits that graze on grass. Secondary consumers are carnivores or omnivores that prey on primary consumers. For instance, a fox that eats a rabbit is a secondary consumer. Tertiary consumers are at the top of the ruokajärjestys and feed on secondary consumers, or sometimes on both primary and secondary consumers if they are omnivores. Eagles that eat snakes, which in turn eat mice, represent a tertiary consumer.

In many ecosystems, there are also decomposers, such as bacteria and fungi, which play a crucial role. They break down dead organic matter from all trophic levels, returning essential nutrients to the soil or water, making them available for producers to use again. This recycling process is vital for the continuous functioning of the ecosystem. Ruokajärjestys can be linear, or more complex with branching pathways, forming a food web. Understanding these relationships is key to comprehending ecosystem dynamics and the impact of changes within them.
