runically

Runically is an adverb that describes something done in a manner relating to runes or runic writing. It derives from runic, with the adverbial suffix -ly. The term is not a standard scholarly category but is used in contemporary scholarship, epigraphy, and popular writing to indicate that a text, inscription, or design employs runic characters or replicates their stylistic features.

In archaeology and philology, texts described as runically inscribed use one of the historic runic alphabets (Elder Futhark, Younger Futhark, or Anglo-Saxon Futhorc). Runically oriented descriptions may address the transliteration of runes, the interpretation of their sound values, or the layout and ligature patterns typical of runic inscriptions.

Because runically is largely a descriptive, not a technical term, its usage varies; in formal publications authors may prefer “written in runic script” or “inscribed with runes” rather than the adverb. In popular culture and design, runically inspired fonts or carvings adopt the angular, straight-line aesthetic associated with runes.
