Ruiskupäällystys, known in English as spray coating or spray finishing, is a finishing process where a coating material is applied to a surface by atomizing it into fine droplets and propelling them onto the surface. This method is widely used across various industries for applying paints, lacquers, varnishes, adhesives, and other liquid or semi-liquid coatings. The primary advantage of spray coating is its ability to produce a smooth, uniform, and often thinner film compared to traditional brush or roller application, especially on complex shapes or large surfaces.

The process typically involves a spray gun connected to a source of compressed air, a pump, or an electrostatic charge. The coating material is fed through the gun, where it is atomized by the air, liquid pressure, or electrostatic forces. This atomized material is then directed towards the substrate. Different types of spray coating exist, including air spraying (using compressed air to atomize and propel the coating), airless spraying (using high pressure to atomize the coating without air), and electrostatic spraying (using an electric charge to attract the coating to the substrate).

Spray coating offers several benefits, such as speed of application, reduced labor costs, and the ability to achieve excellent finishes. However, it also presents challenges like overspray, which is wasted material that misses the target surface, and the need for proper ventilation and personal protective equipment due to potential inhalation hazards from airborne particles. The effectiveness of spray coating depends on factors like the viscosity of the coating, the type of spray equipment used, the distance from the spray gun to the surface, and the speed of application.
