Rubber tires are ring-shaped devices fitted around wheels to provide traction, cushioning, and load support. Modern tires are pneumatic elastomer composites with an air-filled internal cavity and an exterior tread designed to interact with road surfaces under varying conditions.

Tire composition typically includes natural rubber from Hevea brasiliensis, synthetic rubbers such as styrene-butadiene, reinforcing fillers like carbon black or silica, and metal or fabric reinforcements. The inner liner in tubeless tires forms an air-impermeable barrier. A tire’s structure comprises a tread, sidewalls, body plies, and belts (often steel in passenger tires) arranged to balance strength, flexibility, and grip. Radial and bias-ply constructions are two common layouts, with radial designs prevailing in most modern passenger tires.

The development of rubber tires began in the late 19th century with the advent of the pneumatic tire, popularized by John Boyd Dunlop for bicycles. Over time, tubeless designs became standard, and radial construction entered widespread use after Michelin introduced it in the mid-20th century. Advances in compound chemistry, including synthetic rubbers and silica fillers, have improved grip, wear resistance, and rolling resistance, contributing to fuel efficiency and performance.

Performance and maintenance considerations include appropriate inflation pressure, tread depth, and temperature management, all of which influence traction, braking, and wear. Tire types encompass passenger car, light and heavy truck, winter, all-season, performance, run-flat, and studded variants. Retreading and recycling extend life for commercial tires and reduce environmental impact; regular inspections for cuts, bulges, and punctures are advised for safety.
