Rrødder are the underground organs of vascular plants that anchor the plant and absorb water and minerals from the soil. In Danish, the standard form of the plural is rødder; rrødder is a variant spelling occasionally seen in texts, but the concept remains those underground structures that support the plant’s nutrient and water uptake.

Anatomically, a mature root consists of a root cap that protects the growing tip, a region of cell division, a zone of elongation, and a zone of differentiation. The interior typically contains vascular tissue with xylem and phloem arranged in characteristic patterns, while epidermal cells may produce root hairs that greatly increase surface area for absorption. Roots also interact with soil microbes through the rhizosphere, influencing nutrient availability and plant health.

Roots perform several essential functions. They provide anchorage, store carbohydrates in some species, and primary role is the uptake and transport of water and dissolved minerals to the shoot. Root architecture varies: a taproot system features one dominant root with lateral roots, common in many dicots; a fibrous system comprises many similar-sized roots and is typical of grasses. Adventitious roots can arise from stems or leaves, and aerial roots occur in certain tropical plants and epiphytes.

Human relevance is significant. Root systems supply crops such as carrots, beets, and potatoes, and influence soil structure and erosion control. They host symbiotic relationships, notably mycorrhizal associations that extend nutrient reach, and nitrogen-fixing nodules in some legumes. Root health is affected by soil conditions, moisture, pH, and pests or diseases such as root rots and nematodes, which are common targets of agricultural management.
