In biology, root structures anchor organisms and enable nutrient uptake; metaphorically, rootedness describes how individuals or groups anchor themselves in social and cultural networks.

In social sciences, rootedness often concerns place attachment, cultural continuity, language, family ties, and local institutions. It can influence life choices, civic engagement, and well-being; it can also be associated with stability and continuity, but may limit mobility or adaptation to new environments. In anthropology and ethnography, rootedness is studied as a dynamic relation between people and landscapes, histories, and practices.

In psychology, researchers measure rootedness as sense of belonging, identity solidity, or embedding in a community.
