Rolluik is the Dutch term for a rolling shutter, a window or door cover consisting of horizontal slats that roll up into a box above the opening. Rolluiken are common in the Netherlands and Flanders and are used to control light, improve privacy, and enhance security and weather protection. They are available in exterior and interior variants, with exterior models more widely used for added daylight shading and security.

Most external rolluiken are mounted on the outside of the frame and driven by a motor, though manual crank or strap variants exist. Slats are typically aluminum or PVC, sometimes steel for higher security; the slats may be solid or perforated to balance light transmission with visibility. Modern systems often include remote control or smart-home integration and may feature wind sensors or weather-activated routines.

The benefits include better privacy, reduced solar heat gain and energy use, increased security, and protection for windows against wind and debris. Drawbacks can include higher upfront cost, maintenance needs (lubrication, track cleaning), potential wind damage in exposed locations, and in the case of external shutters, possible egress or fire-safety concerns if not properly designed or maintained.

Installation considerations include fitment to window or door dimensions, the structural support required for motorized versions, and compliance with local building codes or insurance requirements. As a design element, rolluiken come in various finishes and colors to match architectural styles and climate conditions.
