Rivimoottorit, also known as inline engines, are a type of internal combustion engine where the cylinders are arranged in a single straight line. This configuration is one of the simplest and most common engine designs. The number of cylinders can vary, with common configurations including inline-two (I2), inline-three (I3), inline-four (I4), inline-six (I6), and less commonly, inline-five (I5).

The primary advantage of the inline engine is its simplicity and cost-effectiveness in manufacturing. The design is relatively straightforward, leading to fewer moving parts compared to more complex engine layouts like V-engines or flat engines. This simplicity also contributes to easier maintenance and repair. Inline engines, particularly inline-four and inline-six configurations, are known for their inherent balance, especially when designed with a specific cylinder count. For instance, an inline-six engine has perfect primary and secondary balance, resulting in smooth operation.

However, inline engines also have drawbacks. As the number of cylinders increases, the engine becomes longer. This can pose packaging challenges, especially in smaller vehicles or in engine bays where space is limited. A longer crankshaft can also be more prone to torsional vibrations. Despite these limitations, the inline engine remains a popular choice across a wide range of applications, from small cars and motorcycles to larger trucks and industrial equipment, due to its balance of cost, simplicity, and performance.
