A riverflood is a flood event that originates in a river system when water levels rise and overflow the banks, inundating surrounding land. It occurs when river discharge exceeds the capacity of the river channel to carry the flow. Riverfloods can involve widespread water cover along a river corridor and can affect adjacent floodplains, towns, and transportation networks.

Causes of riverfloods include prolonged or heavy rainfall that saturates soils and increases runoff, rapid snowmelt, ice jams that tighten river capacity, and structural failures such as dam or levee breaches. Human factors such as land use changes and urbanization can amplify flood risk by reducing infiltration and increasing peak discharges.

Hydrological processes during a riverflood involve rising water levels, progression of the flood crest downstream, and varying flood extents dependent on basin geometry, rainfall patterns, and upstream storage. Forecasting relies on gauging stations, weather radar, hydrological models, and sometimes satellite data to provide lead times from hours to days.

Impacts range from damage to homes, infrastructure, and agriculture to transportation disruption and ecological changes. While floods can cause harm, they can also contribute to nutrient deposition and groundwater recharge in some regions when managed with ecological sensitivity.

Management and mitigation strategies include floodplain zoning and restoration, levees and floodwalls, reservoir operations, drainage infrastructure, and early warning systems coupled with community preparedness.
