Ristiinkertolaskulla, or cross-multiplication, is a method used to solve equations that express a ratio equality. It rests on the property that if a/b = c/d with b and d nonzero, then a*d = b*c. The cross-multiplication step is equivalent to multiplying both sides by the nonzero product b*d, which preserves equality.

To solve for a variable in a proportion a/b = x/d, multiply across to obtain a*d = b*x, then x = (a*d)/b (assuming b ≠ 0). This rule generalizes to any proportion where the denominators are nonzero.

Example: 3/4 = x/8. Cross-multiply: 3*8 = 4*x, giving x = 6. Another example: 5/2 = y/20. Cross-multiply: 5*20 = 2*y, giving y = 50.

Applications of this method are common in solving problems involving proportional relationships. It is used in scaling recipes, adjusting quantities in mixtures, converting units, estimating map distances, and in geometry to establish similarity when proportional sides are involved.
