Ringlussevõtuga, commonly translated as recycling, is the process of collecting and processing materials that would otherwise be thrown away as trash and turning them into new products. This practice aims to reduce waste, conserve natural resources, and minimize the environmental impact of manufacturing.

The typical recycling process involves several stages. First, materials are collected, often through curbside pickup programs or designated drop-off centers. These collected items are then transported to a sorting facility where they are separated by type, such as paper, plastic, glass, and metal. After sorting, the materials are cleaned and processed. For example, paper is pulped, plastics are melted down, and glass is crushed. Finally, these processed materials are manufactured into new products, which can then be sold back to consumers, completing the cycle.

Different types of materials have varying recycling rates and processes. Paper products, for instance, can be recycled multiple times. Plastics, however, often face challenges due to the variety of plastic types and the additives used in their production, sometimes making them more difficult or less economical to recycle. Metal, particularly aluminum, is highly recyclable and energy-intensive to produce from raw materials, making its recycling particularly beneficial. Glass is also highly recyclable without significant loss of quality.

Recycling has significant environmental benefits. By reusing materials, the need to extract virgin resources like timber, minerals, and fossil fuels is reduced, which in turn lessens habitat destruction and energy consumption associated with resource extraction. Furthermore, recycling often requires less energy than manufacturing products from raw materials, leading to a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions. It also diverts waste from landfills, which can leach harmful substances into the soil and water and take up valuable land space.
