A ring joint is a type of gasket designed for high-pressure and high-temperature sealing applications, commonly found in the oil and gas industry, as well as in chemical processing and power generation. Its primary function is to create a leak-proof seal between two mating flanges. The design of a ring joint gasket relies on the principle of metal-to-metal contact, where the gasket deforms under the applied bolting load, creating a tight seal.

There are several types of ring joint gaskets, including oval, octagonal, and triangular cross-sections. Oval types were historically more common and can be used in standard grooved flanges. Octagonal types offer superior sealing performance due to their higher contact efficiency and are often preferred for more demanding applications. Triangular types are less common and are typically used in specialized equipment.

Ring joint gaskets are manufactured from various metal materials, such as stainless steel, carbon steel, and various alloys, chosen based on the service conditions, including the fluid being handled and the operating temperature and pressure. They are installed within specially machined grooves on the flange faces. When the flanges are bolted together, the gasket is compressed, causing it to plastically deform and fill any imperfections in the flange grooves, thus establishing a seal. Proper selection of gasket material and size, along with correct installation and bolt tightening, is crucial for achieving a reliable and long-lasting seal.
