Riboflavinhiányban, also known as vitamin B2 deficiency, is a condition that occurs when the body does not have enough riboflavin. Riboflavin is a water-soluble vitamin that plays a crucial role in energy metabolism, cell growth, and the breakdown of fats, drugs, and steroids. It is also involved in the normal functioning of the eyes, skin, and nervous system.

The symptoms of riboflavinhiányban can vary in severity and may include cracks at the corners of the mouth (angular stomatitis or cheilosis), inflammation of the tongue (glossitis), dry and scaly skin, sore throat, and swelling of the mucous membranes. In some cases, vision problems such as sensitivity to light and blurred vision may occur. Neurological symptoms are less common but can include numbness and tingling in the extremities.

Riboflavinhiányban is often seen in individuals with inadequate dietary intake of riboflavin, which is found in foods such as milk and dairy products, eggs, lean meats, green leafy vegetables, and fortified cereals. Certain medical conditions can also impair riboflavin absorption or increase its requirement, including alcoholism, malabsorption syndromes, and hyperthyroidism. Prolonged strenuous exercise can also increase the body's demand for riboflavin.

Diagnosis is typically based on clinical signs and symptoms, along with a history of poor dietary intake or underlying medical conditions. Blood tests can measure riboflavin levels, although these are not always routinely performed.

Treatment involves increasing riboflavin intake through diet or supplementation. In most cases, oral riboflavin supplements are effective in restoring adequate levels and resolving symptoms. Severe or prolonged deficiency may require higher doses or intravenous administration. Prevention is best achieved through a balanced diet rich in riboflavin-containing foods.
