Rhombproter is a hypothetical mineral described in theoretical mineralogy as a rhombohedral mineral with marked optical anisotropy and a variable composition dominated by silicate-oxide solid solutions. It is discussed as a member of the rhombohedral crystal system, illustrating how lattice geometry constrains physical properties.

In terms of physical properties, rhombproter crystals are described as rhombohedral in shape. Colors range from colorless to pale gray, with occasional violet or pink tints on certain faces. The Mohs hardness is estimated around 6.0 to 6.5, and the luster ranges from vitreous to pearly on some faces. The density is typically given as about 3.9 to 4.2 g/cm3. Cleavage is described as rhombohedral, with fractures that can be conchoidal or uneven depending on crystal perfection and internal zoning.

Geological setting and formation are speculative. Rhombproter is proposed to form during high-temperature metamorphism in silica-rich, fluid-bearing granulite facies rocks, crystallizing from silicate-oxide melts under specific pressure–temperature conditions and fluid activities. In these hypothetical contexts, it would appear alongside other rhombohedral minerals and be sensitive to the presence of volatiles and compositional layering.

Etymology and naming reflect its crystal geometry. The term combines elements referring to rhombus-like lattice geometry with a suffix implying primacy or original status in the hypothetical mineral family.

Status and significance: Rhombproter is not documented in natural samples and is treated as a pedagogical or thought-experiment mineral. It is used to illustrate crystal-structure constraints, phase relations, and the interplay between composition and lattice geometry in teaching crystal chemistry and metamorphic petrology.
