The causes of rhabdomyolysis are diverse and can include severe physical exertion, trauma, certain medications such as statins, infections, and extreme body temperatures. Genetic predispositions can also play a role. Symptoms vary in severity but often include muscle pain, weakness, and dark-colored urine due to the presence of myoglobin. Other possible signs include fatigue, fever, and nausea.

Diagnosis typically involves blood tests to measure elevated levels of creatine kinase, an enzyme released from damaged muscle, and urine tests to detect myoglobin. Prompt medical attention is crucial to prevent complications. Treatment focuses on rehydration, often with intravenous fluids, to help the kidneys flush out the waste products. Electrolyte imbalances may also need to be corrected. In severe cases, dialysis might be necessary. Early recognition and management are key to a favorable outcome and minimizing the risk of long-term kidney damage.
