The reticulopod is a specialized cellular extension found in certain types of immune cells, most notably macrophages and dendritic cells. These structures play a critical role in the immune response by facilitating the capture and processing of pathogens, debris, and other foreign particles. Unlike the well-known pseudopods, which are temporary projections used for movement and phagocytosis, reticulopods are more permanent and form a dynamic network of thin, mesh-like extensions that radiate from the cell body.

Reticulopods are composed of actin filaments, a key component of the cytoskeleton, which provide structural support and enable the cell to extend and retract these extensions in response to environmental cues. They also play a role in antigen presentation, as they can transport captured antigens to the cell body for processing and subsequent display on major histocompatibility complex (MHC) molecules, thereby activating adaptive immune responses.

The formation and maintenance of reticulopods are regulated by various signaling pathways, including those involving Rho family GTPases, which coordinate actin polymerization and depolymerization. Disruptions in these processes can impair immune function, highlighting the importance of reticulopods in maintaining homeostasis and defending against infections.
