The term “responsevariabele” is Dutch for the statistical concept known in English as the response variable or dependent variable. It refers to the outcome that researchers measure or observe in an experiment or study, while other variables – called independent variables, predictors, or explanatory variables – are considered potential causes or influences.

In a typical observational or experimental design the responsevariabele is the primary focus of analysis. For example, in a medical trial the change in blood pressure after treatment would be the responsevariabele, whereas treatment group, dosage or patient age would be predictors. The choice of responsevariabele determines the choice of statistical model: a continuous response is often analysed with linear regression or ANOVA, whereas a binary outcome uses logistic regression or chi‑square tests.

The responsevariabele must be clearly defined before data collection. It should be measurable, normally distributed if assumptions of parametric tests are to be used, and relevant to the research question. Some disciplines treat multiple responsevariabelen simultaneously, leading to multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) or mixed‑effects models when responses are correlated.

Assumptions underlying the analysis of a responsevariabele include independence of observations, correct specification of the functional form, and appropriate distributional assumptions for the error term. Violations can lead to biased estimates or invalid inference, so diagnostics such as residual plots, normal probability plots, or tests for heteroscedasticity are routinely performed.

When reporting results, scholars present estimates of the effect of each predictor on the responsevariabele, along with measures of variability (standard errors, confidence intervals) and formal tests (t, F, Wald). The interpretation of these statistics is always relative to the responsevariabele: it quantifies how changes in the predictors are expected to alter the outcome.
