Resonanssipiikki is a Finnish term that translates to "resonance peak" in English. It refers to a phenomenon where a system exhibits a significantly amplified response at a particular frequency, known as its resonant frequency. This amplified response can manifest as increased amplitude of oscillations, power absorption, or energy transfer.

Many physical systems possess natural frequencies at which they tend to vibrate or oscillate when disturbed. If an external force or input is applied to the system at or near one of these natural frequencies, resonance occurs. The system readily absorbs energy from the external source, leading to a dramatic increase in the amplitude of its motion or response. This is because the energy supplied by the external force is efficiently stored and released within the system's oscillating components.

Examples of resonance are abundant in physics and engineering. A classic illustration is pushing a child on a swing. If the pushes are timed with the swing's natural back-and-forth motion (its resonant frequency), even small pushes can make the swing go higher and higher. In musical instruments, resonance amplifies the sound produced by vibrating strings, air columns, or membranes. In electrical circuits, resonant circuits are designed to respond strongly to specific frequencies, forming the basis of tuning in radios and televisions. However, resonance can also be detrimental, leading to catastrophic failures in structures like bridges or buildings if subjected to vibrations at their resonant frequencies, as famously demonstrated by the Tacoma Narrows Bridge collapse. Understanding and controlling resonance is crucial in many scientific and engineering applications.
