Reseksiyon is a surgical procedure that removes part or all of an organ, tissue, or tumor. It is used in oncology and other conditions. Resections can be anatomical or non‑anatomical, and may be partial, segmental, wedge, or en bloc. After removal, reconstruction or anastomosis may be performed to restore continuity and function.

Techniques include open surgery, laparoscopy, thoracoscopy, and robotic-assisted approaches. The choice depends on the organ, disease, and patient factors. In cancer surgery, achieving negative margins (R0) and appropriate lymph node assessment are important for prognosis.

Common indications include malignant tumors, benign growths, inflammatory diseases (such as Crohn's), trauma, and obstructive lesions. Examples of resections are hepatic lobectomy or segmentectomy, colectomy, pulmonary lobectomy, gastrectomy, pancreaticoduodenectomy, and intestinal resections.

Preoperative planning involves imaging, biopsy when feasible, nutritional assessment, and optimization of comorbidities. Intraoperative decisions aim to maximize disease clearance while preserving organ function. Potential complications include bleeding, infection, anastomotic leakage, stenosis, and reduced organ function.

Outcomes depend on disease, margins, and postoperative care. Resection can be curative or palliative and is often part of multimodal treatment. Alternatives include ablation, embolization, or medical therapy when surgery is unsuitable.
