Representationalism is an epistemological and metaphysical theory that holds that human knowledge or belief about the world is mediated by mental representations. According to representationalists, the mind does not directly receive stimuli from the external world; instead, sensory inputs are translated into internal symbolic or descriptive forms that stand in for the objects or states of affairs that produced them. This view serves to explain how we can hold beliefs that are true or false about things that are not presently present to our senses.

The idea of representationalism has roots in the work of early philosophers, but it was formally articulated in the 20th century by thinkers such as W. V. Quine and Hilary Putnam. Quine’s causal theory of reference posits that belief content is shaped by a causal chain from past experiences to present language, while Putnam’s “brain in a vat” thought experiment illustrates how meaning depends on representations rather than direct experience. Others, like John Searle and Jerry Fodor, advanced related ideas about intentionality and mental content being disembodied and computable.

Representationalism has influenced cognitive science, where mental states are modeled as symbolic or sub-symbolic representations that can be processed algorithmically. In philosophy of language, it supports the notion that sentences refer to world states through internal representations. Neuroscientists use the representational framework to study how sensory cortex constructs perceptual representations.

Critics argue that representationalism struggles to explain the immediacy of perception and often invokes a hard problem of consciousness in justifying how a representation can provide knowledge of an external object. Some empirical evidence from direct perception theories and phenomenology suggests possibilities for a more direct, non-representational link between mind and world. Despite these debates, representationalism remains a central theoretical approach in understanding cognition, perception, and knowledge.
