repetirse

Repetirse is a Spanish pronominal verb formed from repetir and the reflexive pronoun se. It is used primarily to express two related ideas: that someone says or does something again (repeating oneself), and that an event or situation occurs again or recurs.

Origin and meaning. Repetir means “to repeat,” and the addition of se gives repetirse the sense of the action happening to the subject itself or of the action recurring. The verb can convey an insistence on saying something again, as in not repeating words, or describe a pattern or occurrence that happens repeatedly in time. In many contexts, especially with the impersonal or passive voice, repetirse can emphasize recurrence rather than intentional repetition.

Conjugation and forms. As a pronominal verb, repetirse takes reflexive pronouns: me repito, te repites, se repite, nos repetimos, os repetís, se repiten in the present indicative. Other tenses follow the standard paradigm of repetir with the appropriate reflexive pronoun (e.g., me repetí, te repetiste, se repitió; se repitieron). The non-reflexive form repetir is used when the action is directed at something or someone else (to repeat a word, a phrase, a action). In everyday speech, repeated occurrences are often phrased with se in impersonal constructions: se repiten los mismos errores.

Usage and examples. Common uses include: to tell someone not to repeat themselves, as in no te repitas; to describe recurrence, as in la historia se repite (the story repeats itself); or to indicate that the same errors or patterns recur, as in los problemas se repiten cada año. The noun repetición and adjectives like repetitivo are related terms.
