Depending on local needs, reningsanlegg can include separate treatment lines for municipal sewage, industrial effluent, and process water, and may also recover resources such as energy from sludge.

A typical reningsanlegg combines physical, chemical, and biological processes. Wastewater first passes through screens and grit chambers to remove solids, followed by primary sedimentation. Biological treatment, often via activated sludge or fixed-film systems, reduces organic matter and nutrients. Additional stages such as secondary clarification, nutrient removal (nitrogen and phosphorus), and tertiary treatment (filtration, disinfection) may be used to meet regulatory standards. Sludge produced during treatment is thickened and aerobically or anaerobically stabilized, with digestion to generate biogas for energy. Treated effluent is discharged or reused, depending on local permits.

Reningsanlegg operate under environmental regulations that set limits on pollutants and require monitoring of inflows, outflows, and residuals. They face challenges such as aging infrastructure, energy consumption, and the need for nutrient removal and resource recovery. Future trends include optimization of energy use, implementation of advanced nutrient removal, and enhanced monitoring through digital tools and automation.
