Reningsanlegg

Reningsanlägg is a Swedish term that translates to wastewater treatment plant or sewage treatment works in English. It refers to a facility designed to remove contaminants from wastewater, typically sewage, before it is discharged back into the environment. The primary goal of a reningsanlägg is to protect public health and the environment by reducing the amount of pollutants, such as organic matter, nutrients, pathogens, and other harmful substances, present in the water.

Wastewater treatment plants operate through a series of processes. The initial stage often involves mechanical treatment, where large objects are screened out and grit is removed. This is followed by primary treatment, where solid organic matter settles out as sludge. The next stage, secondary treatment, employs biological processes, often using microorganisms to break down dissolved organic pollutants.
