Reniiniärityksellä, often translated as "renin secretion," refers to the physiological process by which the enzyme renin is released into the bloodstream. This release is primarily carried out by specialized cells within the kidneys called juxtaglomerular cells. These cells are located in the walls of the afferent arterioles, which are small blood vessels that supply blood to the glomerulus.

The secretion of renin is a crucial step in the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS). This system plays a vital role in regulating blood pressure and fluid balance. Renin acts as the rate-limiting enzyme in this cascade, initiating a series of biochemical reactions that ultimately lead to the production of angiotensin II, a potent vasoconstrictor, and aldosterone, a hormone that promotes sodium and water reabsorption.

Several factors can stimulate renin secretion. A decrease in renal blood flow, such as that caused by hypotension, is a primary trigger. Similarly, reduced sodium delivery to the distal tubule of the nephron, often monitored by macula densa cells, also stimulates renin release. The sympathetic nervous system, through beta-1 adrenergic receptors on juxtaglomerular cells, can also enhance renin secretion, particularly during stress or exercise. Conversely, elevated blood pressure and increased sodium levels tend to suppress renin secretion. The precise regulation of renin release is essential for maintaining cardiovascular homeostasis.
